Merriam-Webster defines success as a “favorable or desirable outcome.” You probably already have your own idea of what it means to be successful; you might have developed this idea way back when you were a child. Perhaps you associated success with having your own property or chain of businesses. Maybe you linked success with having and raising your own family. Or maybe your idea of success is simply coming to terms with yourself and fully accepting yourself for who you really are. Success is highly subjective. Different strokes for different folks, right?
But while everyone may have his or her own definition of a favorable or desirable outcome, the fact remains that THOUGHT is an important factor in attaining success. It has been said that all things begin in the mind, and success is no exception. Before you achieve your goals, you need to have an idea of what it is you would like to achieve. This thought then leads to action, and this action leads to results.
For the longest time, success has been attributed to working long and hard, and while hard work is an important factor too, what you probably don’t realize is that visualization plays an equally important part.
Visualization means creating clear and specific images in your mind of what you desire to happen. It means harnessing the power of your imagination. It means drawing a vivid mental image of yourself being successful, finally having what you have always wanted in your hands. For example, if your goal is to have a specific new car, picture yourself having that exact car. Imagine yourself sitting behind the wheel. What are you doing? How do you feel while driving the car? How does the car’s interior feel? Let your imagination go. Really think that you truly have your dream car.
Keep this picture in your mind, and visualize as frequently as you can. This mental practice preps your mind and body for the event when you will be owning your dream car. After a while, without you being conscious of it, your body will seek out ways to make your mental imagery of your goal come true. This is due to the link between the body and mind because for your entire being to function completely, the two have to work together. What one wants, the other gets. When you picture yourself getting that car, your body will kick into action and do what it can to help you turn that image into reality.
Visualization doesn’t mean completely neglecting the physical aspect of working hard to turn your dreams into reality. It doesn’t mean letting go of your job and sitting back on your favorite chair, visualizing as hard as you can on that dream car, confident you’ll get it without working hard because that’s what visualization does, right?
Wrong. Visualization is a tool that works best when paired with hard work, perseverance, and determination. Visualization isn’t everything in your quest to success, but it does speed up the process. And that speaks a lot.
Your thoughts play a crucial part in reaching your goals and dreams. Foster and nurture them. In your mind, believe that you have what you have always wanted. Harness the power of your thoughts. The results will pleasantly surprise you.
